This week’s big news is the release of Sylvania: The Cursed County, the latest supplement for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. While the physical copies won’t be available until next year, the PDF is available and- as we’ll see in a moment- doing rather well for itself in the sales department!
As the Cubicle 7 Games release stated, this is the first of three books that will be set in that benighted province.
Dreadful tales come in threes, and this is true for your travels to the Cursed County. Familiarise yourself with Sylvania now, because the danger is far from over. Two upcoming companion books will broaden your adventures with new creatures to encounter and fresh stories to uncover.
As the opening release, The Cursed County seems to be a sort of GM’s guide, with little content in the way of new goodies for players. It’s not clear that this was Cubicle 7’s initial intent when the content was announced under its original title, the Sylvania Setting Guide. Indeed, the rebrand came without announcement, and they even went back and updated the original announcement from a month ago on the official blog.
All the same, even if the book is an adjustment in release strategy it has delivered content a bit quicker than many expected. Here’s to seeing what’s around the next, dimly-lit and sinister corner!
RPG Bestsellers
Bookwriters get their New York Times bestseller lists, so why shouldn’t we enjoy the same thing? While we don’t have any aggregated sales lists, we can use DriveThruRPG’s top-seller list as a reasonable barometer- and here’s this week’s snapshot!
#1 ( - ) Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay: Sylvania: The Cursed Country
#25 (-10). Warhammer The Old World: Talagaad Adventures
#60 (-37). Imperium Maledictum: Adeptus Mechanicus GM’s Guide
#124 (-20). Imperium Maledictum: Core Rulebook
#125 (-4). Wrath & Glory: Core Rulebook
#130 (-46). Imperium Maledictum: Adeptus Mechanicus Player’s Guide
#168 (-27). Imperium Maledictum: Core Rulebook (German)
What a debut for Sylvania: The Cursed Country, straight to the top of the charts! Overall Cubicle 7’s titles slipped a bit this week, as evidenced by all the red, but still a decent showing overall. Titles that were clinging on by their fingertips last week, including The Old World Player’s Guide and both Imperium Maledictum Inquisition Guides, slipped off the slope this week altogether.
Finally, it was nice to see the German Edition of Imperium Maledictum’s Core Rulebook still tracking a week after it cracked the charts. Ausgezeichnet!
ICYMI
Careless Conjuration rang in its first birthday this week, and celebrated with the next in it’s terrific series, The GM’s Guide to The Enemy Within. This week it’s a look at chapters 5-7, as the players arrive in Bogenhafen. Happy Anniversary!
Wargamer highlighted a new Fighting Fantasy gamebook coming out, Sir Ian Livingstone’s Tomb of the Golden Skull, which features a cover from Karl Kopinski! “If you're under the age of 30, it's possible you might not know the name Fighting Fantasy or even what a 'gamebook' is,” notes Alex Evans, “but you should.” For games of a certain age like myself, these kinds of books were solo-RPG gaming before solo-RPG gaming evolved to what it is today. A terrific piece!
u/ConflictBetter1332 shared a map of the Southern Chaos Wastes on the r/WarhammerFantasyRPG Reddit. Pictured above, it’s a lush rendition of one of the world’s most formidable locales!
Some interesting things I’ve come across in the RPG world on Substack include:
Prepping a One-Shot to Last One Session by Chris Vicari tackles the time sinks that often can bloat a one-shot adventure
Terrific roundup of the broader tabletop landscape here from The Tabletop Engineer, including a great overview for those wanting to start their own zine!
Finally, while not directly RPG related, Warhammer history is a fascinating subject, and here’s the latest from Exploring Warhammer!
Finally, if you happen to be subscribed to Black Library author John French (Dropsite Massacre, The Hollow King), his newsletter this week was all about his experience with role-playing games. He’s helped write several of the Dark Heresy RPG books, including The Inquisitor’s Handbook and Disciples of the Dark Gods, and noted that as he’s returning to RPG writing his newsletter will have more such content going forward (sign up free here). As he noted:
There is a sizable overlap between writers, particularly in genre, and role players*. Look at Kieron Gillen who has forged his interest in RPGs into the DIE comics and the DIE roleplay game. Adrian Tchaikovsky has talked about his enjoyment of RPGs, and has a volley of games based on his works coming out: the Tyrant Philosophers Roleplay Game, and Children of Time: The Roleplay Game. George RR Martin has talked about playing GURPS, Call of Cthulhu, and Super Worlds. Scratch a genre writer, and a role player makes a reaction roll with advantage.
Coming Attractions
Here’s a list of the known upcoming releases from Cubicle 7 based on the available preorder information we have. Note that Cubicle 7’s own delivery estimates appear to be just that- estimates- which is why many products have an upcoming delivery listed for Q1 while we’re already past that.
This section will be updated weekly in this column, with new or updated info presented in boldface.
To make this section more useful, starting this week I’ll be breaking them out by game.
