I just checked and I cannot even find the email settings in the app. Maybe it's a desktop only feature?
In my case, I don't mind receiving the emails. They are basically just reminders to visit the app. I can see the title, flip through the article, then into the trash it goes, with a simple swipe.
If you would start posting and emailing daily, though, that would probably create some annoyance. That would be the time when I would grudgingly need to figure out where to find the customization settings.
Thanks Marton! I don’t expect to have that kind of publication rate anytime soon, if ever. I think as a “worst” case scenario I could see four pieces going out: the usual weekly column for each side, plus a featurette for both. Right now it’s pretty routinely at three.
Hey David! The only way I can think of is just by visiting the site. That’s why email notifications are so helpful, but I just want to be sure I’m not giving folks too much of a good thing! :)
So the update will be in tomorrows Black Library Weekly, but as a sneak peek I’ve gone ahead and split out the Black Library content here into two categories.
If you want ONLY to get the digest (which, of course, will always have links to everything else I did that week), then just go to your notifications menu for this page and opt in to Black Library Weekly and opt out of Black Library Features. 🤘
I suppose that each person can only give their own preference for how they prefer to be notified of new content. For my part, I get Substack app notifications on my phone and tablet. Email is superfluous. If you emailed all articles every week, I would opt not to receive any of them. But I also consider it my own responsibility to manage my notifications. It makes no sense to get annoyed that your inbox is stacking with emails from a source you signed up for and engage with regularly. It's not like spam or orgs that you had to subscribe to just to see something once and now you're inundated by their emails. You have to go into your account and set up notifications the way you want to receive them.
I think it makes sense to communicate your work using all the tools at your disposal. It's up to consumers/readers to manage their online experience.
Those are fair points and hard to argue with. I think you’re right, the best I can do is give folks the tools to manage the content how they’d like, and the rest is up to them!

I'm newer to Substack, how else would I know that you've published content if I'm not getting an email notification?

In that case I definitely would prefer emails in a digest form once a week.
