So big news this week, as I’ve rechristened the Substack to better reflect what I’m looking to build. You can find the full story here, but the TLDR version is that two months ago, I started it up as a home for my Black Library Weekly column over on Tabletop Battles (formerly Goonhammer), where I continue to serve as a reviewer.

As I’ve continued to expand my Warhammer RPG content, The Black Library Dispatch became less of a fit. Voila, it’s now the Warhammer Wordforge! I’ve also rechristened this column to the Warhammer RPG Weekly (formerly Warhammer RPG SITREP). Simpler, cleaner, clearer.

With the site’s new, clear distinction between Black Library and RPG content- and the ability for Subscribers to tailor what they get in their inbox- this is also the first RPG weekly that is being sent out in email format as well as published here.

Voll Adventures Releases

We can cross another one off the release map below, as Voll Adventures made its way into the physical world this week. This latest sourcebook/adventure supplement for Imperium Maledictum contains information about the planet Voll as well as five standalone adventures for GM’s to offer their players.

Given Imperium Maledictum’s comparatively narrower offerings profile compared to Wrath & Glory, this is a welcome addition.

• Want to get a look at what you could be winning this week? Jeff McAleer of The Gaming Gang did a review of the Player’s Guide for Warhammer: The Old World. Jeff is clearly held in some esteem by Cubicle 7 Games, as the advance reviewer copy they provided him was a Collector’s Edition!

• Careless Conjuration took a look at Slaughter in Spittlefield, an adventure “dripping in Old World black humour” that was part of WFRP’s Ubersreik Adventures from 2019.

• Tributes to John Blanche continued to pour in to mark his passing. Of note were ones from It Always Rains in Nuln and Ill Met by Morrslieb. I also came across this terrific interview with Sean Äaberg.

We have a cover!

Cubicle 7 Games this week released the cover art for its upcoming Warhammer: The Old World release, Talagaad Adventures1.

An adventure anthology, Talagaad Adventures contains “a series of standalone stories set in and around Talagaad that can slot seamlessly into any ongoing campaign in the area.” These are2:

Requiescat in Pace

Warhammer lost one of its most visionary lights this week in the person of John Blanche. I’ll be paying full respects to John’s incredible contribution to this extraordinary universe he helped build with this Monday’s Black Library Weekly3, but here’s a lovely tribute from Tabletop Battles.

Community Creativity

As much as I enjoy stringing words together, now and again I wish I’d instead been born with the talent for visualizing the imagination- and this is certainly one of those. This week’s visual treat comes by way of u/ConflictBetter1332, who shared this amazing private commission he did for a client. If you’re interested in an HD file of it, that’s available too! ConflictBetter1332 also shared that it’s their two-year anniversary of working for Games Workshop and Cubicle 7, ringing it in by sharing the first-ever map they created for the world. Happy anniversary to you both!

u/Taryf’s talents seem to be of the stringing-words-together variety, except theirs is code. Taryf shared a toolkit they’d built for Wrath & Glory this week, from a themed player/GM message-sharing console to facilitate communication (while deepening immersion) to a dice-roller, a soundboard skeleton to NPC and name generators. Wow!

Speaking of dice-rollers, u/GrimDragonStudio made one specifically for Warhammer: The Old World. It doesn’t just roll dice, but has probability indicators that can take into account tests both grim and glorious! GrimDragonStudios also made a searchable adventure index for WFRP and TOW, an ambitious and intriguing project that will also allow players to give ratings to the different adventures they’ve experienced. Make sure to stop on by and leave a few ratings if you can!

Finally, u/FaallenOon shared a few tools they’d made for Age of Sigmar: Soulbound, including a relic generator, an encounter generator, and a browsable equipment list.

• Ill Met by Morrslieb had a terrific piece this week on adapting WFRP for romantic fantasy. “Romantic fantasy,” Zekiel defines, “suggests that victory can come through more traditionally feminine traits of compassion and relationship-building.4”

• Happy belated birthday to WFRP fansite Kalevala Hammer, ringing in 19 years of passionate exploration of Warhammer role-play. Now that is some accomplishment!

The Warhammer RPG SITREP appears every Friday, bringing you the week that was for Warhammer-based role-playing games new and old alike!

Considering I’m writing an ongoing feature here on the history of the Black Library, it should come as little surprise how much I enjoy gaming history in general (ask me sometime about how much I’ve written about the story of Magic: the Gathering).

Thus I was delighted to discover this week that Gideon, of the terrific Awesome Lies blog, announced that he’s been writing a comprehensive, academically-minded history of Warhammer.

The book will “draw on more than fifteen years of research,” he noted, “including access to rare and unpublished documents, interviews with many of those involved in the games’ creation and careful review of financial and other corporate records. It considers the games’ complex interaction with each other, their relationship to other media and the impact on them of personal, corporate and sociocultural history.”

Don’t threaten us with a good time! I’m very excited to see how this comes along, and it’s a great step that he’s already signed with a book publisher, MIT Press (yes, that MIT), and will be called Forging of Worlds.

No Rest for the Weary

If you’d thought that the Cubicle 7 Games gang had wrapped up their whirlwind publicity tour and headed back on the rocky road to Dublin, they haven’t quite made it back yet. This weekend they’ve got a booth at the UK Games Expo, in Birmingham, for the event’s nineteenth year. They’ve got loads of merchandise for sale, as well as a team-up with Burgschenider, the folks behind the Warhammer Armory line of props and costumes.

In most cases, unexpected deliveries are things for the kids from my mother, and with the end of school fast approaching it seemed like gramma was up to her usual generosity. Instead, to my surprise I found the box was to me, from Cubicle 7 Games.

If there was an email letting me know that my preorder for the new Warhammer: The Old World RPG had been dispatched I never saw it, and discovering some unexpected goodies was the first of two big surprises.

The second was that everything in the box had been doubled.

Two copies of the Player’s Guide. Two Gamemaster’s Guides. Two pads of character sheets. Each pair was packaged in their own shipping box, then like some RPG pinata all three boxes were stuffed inside of a larger box. Little surprise with that much care that everything arrived in immaculate shape.

My first assumption was that I had perhaps derped when I preordered everything way back when, but a look at my order confirmation showed that no, I had been fiscally responsible and only ordered a single set. That meant the error was on Cubicle 7’s end, so I shot off a quick message to let them know what had happened. I noted that it was hard to imagine shipping the duplicates back to Dublin would be cost-effective, but that I was more than happy to use the extras in a giveaway for the SITREP.

Win-win, right?

They responded quickly, acknowledging the error and noting they’ll be following up with an answer as to resolution, so keep an eye on next week’s SITREP and you might find yourself in the running for a set!

Ask Me (Almost) Anything

The fellas at Cubicle 7 are continuing their publicity whistle-stop tour this week, gamely participating in an AMA on Reddit yesterday. Big thanks first of all to Dom, Pádraig, and Michael for participating, and to moderator u/YoungsterMcPuppy of r/WarhammerOldWorldRPG for putting it together.

They spent an hour there and typed responses at a respectable clip. While I’d certainly recommend enjoying the whole thing, here’s a Cliff’s Notes summary.

TOW Physical Release Info

The Player's Guide, Gamemaster's Guide, card decks, dice, and character sheets will be released in game stores from 27th May 2026.

The card decks and characters sheets are being delivered to our preorder customers as we speak, and are available to order from our website. The maps are being shipped separately in tubes to avoid damaging them alongside other items - if you've had any issues, please contact our customer support team.

Tone of the game

Getting the tone of the game right is a constant conversation for us at every stage of a book’s development. In this case, the “glory” of the World of Legend is very much a relative descriptor - no-one in this time period would consider themselves fortunate, it’s only in comparison to the truly apocalyptic stakes of the End Times era that we realise how good the Empire had it before the Great War Against Chaos.

The flip side to that relative peace is a sense of complacency - without a greater foe to unite against, the Imperial claimants have turned on each other, and pay little regard to the warnings of the player characters about horrors lurking in the woods. Rising to “glory” means that the characters can’t expect anyone else to support or protect them. Any chance of survival is dependant on their own strength and guile. Making a stand in the dark, knowing that your sacrifice will be unmourned and unremembered and might not even make a difference... that’s the kind of choice that defines a hero.

We see our role to shine a spotlight on the parts of the World of Legend that the tabletop wargame can't - the more civilian dimension, the average life of the lowest pegs on the totem pole. But that's a constant conversation with Games Workshop. Where we overlap, we want to do it in a mutually supportive way, that enriches both games simultaneously.

We wanted combat to feel dangerous, and give players meaningful choices and actions. We've wanted to do a totally hit-point free combat system for ages, and this seemed like the perfect game for it.

With the Old World Roleplaying Game, we really wanted players to feel invested in their local community - to have Careers to work, Endeavours to attend between adventures, local Contacts and Assets they have cultivated. That felt like the best way to bring the setting to life in a way that engaged the players, as well as depicting the life of the typical Empire citizen with authenticity. That said, we share your enthusiasm to explore the rest of the Old World, with all the trials and tribulations that implies. Watch this space!

We all know what’s coming up for the World of Legend: the Great War Against Chaos breaks something fundamental in the fabric of the Warhammer World, setting in motion a long decline that paves the way for the End Times. Our game isn’t about averting that fate - it’s about characters who are powerless in the face of vast unstoppable horrors, but resolve to fight anyway, if only for their own survival. The reasons people choose to make a stand - even if it might not ultimately make a difference - are what great characters are made of. And we think it can make for a fantastic roleplaying game.

The Design Process

Michael: It’s a collaborative, iterative, hugely fulfilling process - we’re very lucky to do this for a living! Every release we do is the combined effort of so many people, from the team at Cubicle 7, to our amazing team of freelance contributors, to the folks at Games Workshop who are always so passionate and insightful and generous with their time. The most gratifying part is seeing it connect with an audience who are excited to bring the game to their table - that’s the payoff that makes the whole process worthwhile. If you’re an aspiring TTRPG creator and would like to be part of that, please do get in touch! We’re always looked for new, talented freelancers to join our pool.

Dom: Knowing what you’re trying to achieve is important. Have a strong idea of what you want to make, why you want to make it that way, and apply that at each stage of the process. I enjoy the challenge of making things as well as I can, and always looking for ways to develop and improve my craft. Satisfaction comes from making things I’m proud of, and if other people like them too that’s a wonderful source of joy.

We’re really happy with the system. A D10 dice pool worked for a number of reasons - the convenience of having target numbers on the sheet, the satisfaction of rolling extra dice as you level up, even just the fact that rolling 10-sided dice feels right for gaming in the Old World for experienced Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay players.

Every decision is a trade off, but we used our key design goals as a northstar to lead us through: making something that was easy to teach but satisfying to master, minimised book-keeping that would distract from the story, and presented the World of Legend in all its grim glory. The combat system, the improvisational magic system, the narrative systems that tied Careers/Contacts/Grim Portents/Dark Threads together... all of that emerged from having those clear goals to strive for.

What’s most satisfying is seeing all those systems work together as a cohesive whole - and hearing the stories from people’s games that are generated as a result!

We designed the economy rules to give some real game impacts between the different levels of social and financial status without requiring players to track every last coin. If you'd like to track coin more conventionally, take a look at Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay's Consumer's Guide, it sounds like it would work for your group's tastes very well.

An official campaign?

Without saying too much... if you've already played The Hand That Feeds in the Starter Set, you're well prepared for where the adventure is going next, and what you might dig up when you get there...

Future expansions?

The next book for preorder will be Talagaad Adventures, a series of standalone stories set in and around Talagaad that can slot seamlessly into any ongoing campaign in the area. After that, we're looking at a campaign, and other supplements that expand the setting and the character options available to players.

Our focus is on embellishing our core setting of Talabec and areas that have been highlighted in the Warhammer: the Old World tabletop wargame. But if Games Workshop invited us to explore the City of the Damned, we would bite their hand off for the opportunity!

We'd absolutely love to [do Cathay]! We're such fans of the World of Legend that there's no corner of the setting we wouldn't be excited to bring to the RPG eventually - the challenge is working out what order to do it in. We're currently concentrating on supporting our core setting of Talabec with adventures, campaigns, etc before we expand elsewhere. It's important to provide a satisfying depth to game locations - we don't want to risk covering too wide an area shallowly, as that can limit its usefulness. Dom's already gotten overexcited and mentioned Nuln in an interview though, so watch this space for more!

There are options for Bretonnian characters (and a Bretonnian-only Career, the Knight-Exile) in the Player's Guide. We'd love to provide more character options and setting guides for Bretonnia in the future! But enriching our core setting of Talabec is the focus for now.

[Re: more river-based content] I think you're really going to like "Oars in the Water", an upcoming story in Talagaad Adventures!

[Re: Possibility of other pre-college magic systems] That would be great! For the corebook we focussed on the Magic Lores that were relevant to the most Origins, and most commonly practised in the Empire in this era. Not to mention the ones that received beautiful new miniatures in Warhammer: the Old World tabletop wargame...

Yes, we definitely want to expand beyond the core setting of Talagaad and its immediate surrounds eventually. Talagaad is an illustrated example of how to make games in the World of Legend really sing - future setting expansions will be built to that template, and we encourage Gamemasters to emulate that range of Contacts/landmarks/Dark Threads, etc. when exploring new settings in their own games.

We cooperate closely with Games Workshop as the narrative of the Old World tabletop wargame develops. There's loads of great stuff going on even before we get to the Great War, from Settra's invasion of the Border Princes, to Frydaal's invasion of Westerland. We've got a load of narrative threads from the core books and starter set that we will develop too!

We’d love to expand on the range of spells available to Wizard characters at some point! For now, we’d love to hear about the crazy improvised spells that players have been working on.

[Re: which factions will see content] Our focus is where the Warhammer: the Old World tabletop wargame is going - that's where all the new content is coming from, and that's the material we're excited to play around with. That said, there are a few exceptions in the RPG here and there (Vampires, like you said, also Halflings too), so never say never.

We'd love to do more material for Sigmarite protagonists in the future, but for now we're quite excited to position Witch Hunters as antagonists who cause as many problems as they solve. In the meantime, the right choice of Lores and Assets for the Bounty Hunter Career could make a really excellent Witch Hunter.

Solo Mode?

That would be great! It's one we've been mulling over for a while - the challenge is producing a system that satisfies our expectations for the game.

Maps?

This is something we've been focusing on a lot recently - you might have seen the open call we put out for freelance cartographers (we're still taking submissions!). I think you'll be happier with the presentation in the upcoming Talagaad Adventures, but it's something we'll continue to work on.

Impact on WFRP 5th Edition?

We have different design goals for the two games, so there are some intentional boundaries between them, but that comes from them having different objectives rather than solely to make them different. We'll do what's right for each game, if that makes sense

The Old World shouldn't impact Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay releases, and there's loads in development for that game at the moment, from the new rulebook to Marienburg, a brand new campaign and more. On maps, you can get the Old World map right now, and we release poster maps featuring maps from across our lines periodically, so keep an eye on the website and subscribe to our newsletter. On Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay releases - their focus right now is developing a new edition of the game, which should be available to preorder this year to celebrate the game's 40th anniversary!

What they’re proud of

The combat system, the improvisational magic system, the beautiful cover art, the integrated network of Contacts/Dark Threads/Grim Portents to produce emergent stories... ask each of us and you'll get a different answer! We're happiest of all when we can really see those elements connecting with our audience. There are always extra Careers, trappings, antagonists, plot hooks, etc. that we're sad to see end up on the cutting room floor, but it's all in the service of making the core book as accessible to new players as possible. And it'll all end up in a supplement eventually!

Legality of fan supplements

Have a look at Games Workshop's IP guidelines for fan-created content on how to go about this sort of thing. Do keep an eye out for our writer calls, if you'd like to try your hand at submitting something!

Most questions were answered. Notably, they answered all of the ones that were posted well in advance of the actual event… except one.

Ahh well, you win some, you lose some. And I can’t say I didn’t greatly enjoy the insights and remarks that they were willing to share, so really it’s a win however you slice it.

Dirty Deeds

Right on schedule the day after discussing upcoming The Old World content, Cubicle 7 officially announced Talagaad Adventures, an upcoming five-adventure supplement.

Each entry in the anthology is a standalone story, from tangling with the criminal underworld to a daring river escape, a savage Beastmen assault to getting caught between squabbling nobles.

No date has been announced yet, but definitely one to keep an eye on!

Last week we took a look at the freshly-announced Carngrad Adventures, the next offering for Cubicle 7 Games’ Soulbound: Champions of Chaos line. They didn’t keep up waiting long for it, as it was listed for preorder this week. Sure you’ll have to wait for the first quarter of 2027 for physical delivery, but as usual you’ll get a PDF straightaway. You can also simply buy the PDF as a standalone for half the price (USD $19.99 vs $39.99).

Meanwhile, Dominic McDowell and Pádraig Murphy of Cubicle 7 were guests this week on Deep Strike, the Warhammer TV show that goes behind the scenes of Warhammer animations, video games, and other licensed products. Host Alex Doddy kept it light, guiding a conversation around role-playing games that was largely accessible to a non-RPG audience who might be interested in expanding their Warhammer gaming horizons. As a result, while it is somewhat skippable for those wanting to get in under the hood a bit more with Cubicle 7’s games, there were still interesting conversations around topics like:

• How they approached translating Warhammer into a role-playing game.

• How the rulebooks and models of the tabletop wargame inform their RPG design.

• What it was like designing the first-ever Age of Sigmar RPG, and what their favorite parts of it were (spoiler: it’s the city of Brightspear!)

• Why they’ve opted to create new systems rather than adapt existing ones (for example, Wrath & Glory vs Imperium Maledictum)

You also get some truly useful insights to some of their game worlds. For example, in the Wrath & Glory setting of the Gilead System, being completely surrounded by the Cicatrix Maledictum means that its people have no idea whether or not the greater Imperium beyond even still exists. As a result, it’s a tiny bubble of the greater Imperium, and if you die, notes McDowell, “you will be missed.” That gives a sort of importance and immediacy to the player characters they may not otherwise have, and lends itself to the game’s heroic theme.

It’s certainly worth a watch if you’re a subscriber to WarhammerTV, and I hope they’ll continue to feature more about Warhammer’s role-playing games in the future.

Organizing Wonder, Redux

Two weeks ago I talked about the new, limited-edition maps that were being offered by Cubicle 7, and some website ordering issues that they were experiencing. This led to them posting on Facebook a note about the extension of the limited run (see the above screenshot). While I haven’t seen anything posted about a date extension, they were due to conclude the ordering window on 04 MAY, and at time of writing they’re still available on the webstore- but only they know for how much longer.

This week, Ill Met by Morrslieb was back with another review of a WFRP 2e adventure, this time Terror in Talabheim. These reviews are always very in-depth and thorough, and it was an interesting dive into a well-regarded adventure.

Meanwhile over on Reddit, u/Delta1116732 shared a Warhammer 40K galaxy map with the r/40krpg community. While not ‘to scale,’ it’s a useful tool for GM’s and players alike to get a general sense of place in what is undoubtedly a massive universe. Nice work!

While the Champions of Chaos expansion for the Age of Sigmar: Soulbound game hasn’t been released in physical form yet, hopefully players have been getting lots of mileage out of the PDF. That means it’s a good time to start thinking about the next set of adventures for that ruleset, and this week Cubicle 7 Games announced they’ve got one coming up!

Carngrad Adventures is a campaign of four linked adventures that throws the players into the Reaver City. Ruled from above by a gang of warlords known as the Talons, and from below by endless warrens of villainous Skaven, the excitements- and the perils- will mount as they get more and more enmeshed in the lethal politics and scheming of Bloodwind Spoil’s largest settlement.

No release date yet- it’s only just been teased- but we’ll be sure to keep an eye on this one as it gets closer to the finish line.

ICYMI

Todd Kozlowski revealed some new additions to the Atlas of the Old World project he’s continuing to work on. This initiative seeks to build a map of the Old World that’s as accurate as possible based on available lore and sources. With this latest announcement, Tood noted that Estalia, Tilea, Kislev, and Norsca have all been added to the map. Great work!

Speaking of WFRP, the Lorebeards interviewed Jude Hornborg, WFRP writer who describes himself as a “B-lister who specializes in projects other people don’t want to do,” he’s been involved with WFRP since the second edition. It’s not often we get to peek behind the curtain and see how the sausage is made, so this was great to see!

Meanwhile at Awesome Lies, Gideon shared a review of The Imperial Zoo, the bestiary supplement for Warhammer Fantasy Role Play 4th Edition. “It tries a bit too hard to be clever,” he noted, “and its invention often feels wasted.”

Finally, Unlocky Rolls kicked off an actual play campaign for WFRP called “Live or Diesdorf.” If you wanted to get in on the ground floor of an actual play campaign, here’s a good place to start.

Calling all cartographers!

Oh, wait, that boat may have already left port1. But if you’re a lover of maps- in particular, Warhammer Fantasy maps- this has been a very exciting week for you.

That’s because Cubicle 7 Games has released several different bundles of maps on a preorder basis. These bundles come rolled and shipped in a tube, which means they’re superb candidates for framing. As naturalist Peter Steinhart noted, “maps are a way of organizing wonder,” and organized wonder looks pretty damn spiffy hanging on the walls of your study.

The maps are size A1, which is 23.4” wide × 33.1” high. In other words, big enough to make a nice impression but not so big they’re hard to frame or find space to hang them. They are available to preorder between now and May 4th, with an estimated arrival date in July.

The preorder window may ultimately be longer, as buyers have expressed some technical difficulties with buying multiple bundles:

This bundle brings you a map of the Empire as well as a closer look at the Sea of Claws region. The Empire map is the backdrop for The Enemy Within campaign, while the Empire’s Northern coast is highlighted with the Sea of Claws one.

The price of fifteen bucks a map holds here as well, as this bundle boasts a trio of locales. Altdorf, Reikland, and Middenheim are laid out in all their glory.

Age of Sigmar Bundle - USD $29.99

If you prefer the Mortal Realms, there’s a pair of Age of Sigmar offerings here. This bundle offers maps of the Greart Parch and city of Brightspear.

Macharian Sector Map - USD $19.99

Finally, for those who prefer their meanderings to be in the grim, dark future, there’s a Macharian Sector map available for your Imperium Maledictum adventures. Since it’s not in a bundle you’re paying $5 more than the bundled single-map price, but it does look fetching.

One of the replies to Cubicle 7’s maps announmcement on Facebook was a question about the Horus Heresy RPG, the subject of our RPG SITREP last week. Usually, off-topic questions tend to get ignored, but not this one.

Tabletop Tactics has continued to release videos of their Wrath & Glory sessions, with the latest installment- the third so far- landing this week. “No more investigation. No more shadows. Just four Inquisitorial agents, a corrupted noblewoman, and a manufactorum that's about to become a warzone.”

Then over on the RPG blog Ill Met by Morrslieb, they reviewed the Core Rulebook for Imperium Maledictum. “This game has got a mechanical system that might be my favourite Warhammer RPG system at the moment,” they conclude at a very in-depth look that’s well worth checking out.

Spare a thought for our friends at Cubicle 7 Games. Back during the Relics festival in February 2025, they kicked off quite a bit of excitement when they teased a new role-playing game based on the Horus Heresy.

Here’s the pitch – the game opens with the infamous betrayal at Isstvan, after which you’re thrown straight into the maelstrom as Legionary Consuls leading a rag-tag warfleet bent on survival and vengeance.

Your first priority is to escape, harried by traitors bent on your destruction. But what then? How will you survive and regroup? How do you overcome the shock of betrayal and keep your forces supplied? Perhaps most importantly – who can you trust?

I don’t know about you, but that sounded exciting as hell to me even as I sometimes wonder if Cubicle 7 might not be trying to do too much with the Warhammer license they’ve grabbed hold of. Timing the preorder window with the launch of the latest edition of the tabletop game seemed a marketing coup, striking while the iron was hot. (It certainly would have prevented yer man here from impulse-buying the Saturnine box, which sits largely untouched even now in my pile of shame.)

But it seemed Cubicle 7’s reach exceeded its grasp as Saturnine came and went with scarce little on the progress of production, and by the time we arrived at the end of last December’s production update, it was given only a passing mention. (“work continues apace…”).

Meanwhile, it’s been radio silence over at their official blog:

The general temperature of the RPG community seems to be, “we’d rather wait and let them get it right instead of rushing it out and getting it wrong,” a position I find reasonable. It’s not like there isn’t plenty else for us to play to get our Warhammer RPG fix. But at the same time, this seems a clear case of overpromise and underdeliver, and the risk a company runs there is that if the end product doesn’t at least meet (let alone clear) consumer expectations, opinion may sour more quickly than it otherwise would.

I also have to question the “broad versus deep” strategy, given that we’re now up to three distinct game systems each for Warhammer 40K (Wrath & Glory, Imperium Maledictum, Horus Heresy1) and Fantasy (WFRP, Soulbound2, The Old World). Obviously there’s precedent here, with previous license-holder Fantasy Flight also stratifying the product line (Dark Heresy3, Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, Black Crusade, and Only War).

An Alternative Proposal

As a fun thought experiment, here’s what I’d love to see for 40K. Mechanically, streamline down to one system. I don’t care which one, just pick a horse and focus on developing it. Other RPG game settings out there don’t split their attention between multiple mechanical systems, and while Warhammer is a massive property in many areas it’s not so vast for role-playing that it necessarily needs to support so many product lines.

Then, I’d explore the opportunity to more closely partner with Games Workshop. GW churns out a massive amount of usable lore, making tie-in products potentially low-hanging fruit. Cubicle 7 was excited to line up the Horus Heresy RPG preorder with the release of the Saturnine box for the marketing boost; imagine the extra buzz they might get if they released the “Ultramar Campaign Sourcebook” at the same time as the 500 Worlds narrative expansion dropped.

New Ultramarine-focused lore. NPC and planet profiles. Adventure hooks and scenarios that tied in with Guilliman’s push to reclaim the lost planets. Want to get really crazy? Split the difference and support both Wrath & Glory and Imperium Maledictum content in the same book. After all, with much of the content system-agnostic there’s plenty of room for dual stat blocks or appendices.

Then- and I’m gonna shoot the moon here, because I’m completely untethered by logistical reality- release mini-modules based on Black Library novels. Sticking to 500 Worlds here, there’s plenty to be mined from, say, Rob Young’s Master of Rites (review) for adventurers in both game systems.

While we await more from those stalwarts toiling away in the word mines at Cubicle 7, around the webway there’s been a bit of Warhammer RPG content to keep our appetites whetted.

Tabletop Tactics has kicked off a playthrough of Wrath & Glory, which is also a good opportunity for those curious about the game to get a feel for how it plays. “In Episode 1, four Inquisitorial agents come together at the command of their Lady Inquisitor,” they note, “secrets begin to surface, and a trail of heresy leads them straight into danger - ending with their first brutal taste of combat!” You can check that out here.

Next, Optimal Game State posted a preview of what’s currently known about WFPR 5th Edition’s mechanics. This comes largely from the new Temple of Spite sourcebook’s PDF. Temple of Spite has some bridge content adapting it for play in the upcoming 5th Edition, providing an early look at what awaits us.

Gideon at Awesome Lies did an in-depth review of Bare Bones, a 22-page adventure for WFRP’s 4th Edition set in the Sea of Claws. Finally, Jeff at The Gaming Gang took a stroll through the covers of Wrath & Glory’s Darktide Extraction.

Hello and welcome to the debut of our weekly RPG Roundup here at the Black Library Dispatch. I’ve long felt that the Venn overlap between the Black Library and Warhammer’s large stable of licensed RPG’s was surprisingly unmined territory. After all, there’s a campaign sourcebook hidden within almost every novel, just waiting to be brought to light. Over at Goonhammer, my primary content vehicle, I’ve written Lore & More features to bridge the gap, such as when I broke down Josh Reynolds’ Deathstorm for RPG use here, or adapted the Warhammer 40,000 Crusade expansion The Nachmund Gauntlet for RPG play here.

Just as the Black Library Weekly is the summary of the week’s goings-on in the literary realm, so too will the Warhammer RPG SITREP be a bite-sized digest of the newsworthy and notable for the role-playing set, whether it be in the Old World, the Mortal Realms, or the grim, dark future where there is only war.

There wasn’t anything new this week on current license-holder Cubicle 7’s blog, but The Gaming Gang put out a review of WFRP’s recent Sea Wardens of Cothique release. That’s the High Elf supplement that expands on the namesake kingdom situated in the Northeast of Ulthuan.

Meanwhile, u/ConferenceGlobal6358 released a player’s map of Reikland, shown above, over on Reddit. Designed to emphasize the terrain rather than political boundaries, he has a high-definition version available here.
